Quick Reference

Breakdown

Stick out of Shotgun Y Trips is a classic zone beater built on triangle stretch reads to the trips side. The three receivers to the trips side run a stick concept (flat, quick out or curl, and a stick/hitch), while the backside runs a complementary route to hold the single defender. Against man coverage it still works thanks to natural leverage and pick action, but its true purpose is stressing zone defenders by attacking the flat, hook, and curl zones simultaneously. Primary read progression is flat to stick to curl, working outside in based on the flow of the underneath defenders.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a cornerback sitting outside the trips numbers pre-snap since that usually signals zone coverage underneath, opening the stick route. If the linebacker to the trips side widens with the flat receiver at the snap, that confirms man coverage and you should snap your eyes to the stick sitting in the void behind him. Beware a strong safety cheating down into the box pre-snap since that often means a Cover 3 buzz or robber look designed to jump the stick route. User-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow hook or flat zone can jump the underneath throws, so double check the user icon before firing the stick route. Twist blitzes or nano blitzes off the edge can beat the protection quickly, so if you see overload pressure looks pre-snap, be ready to get the ball out on rhythm to the flat instead of holding for the deeper curl.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a fake audible to bait the linebacker into revealing man versus zone before the snap.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, key the flat defender first since if he sinks the stick route is wide open underneath.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you see single high safety rotation, giving you an instant answer to blitz looks.

Pair this play with Slant Sail earlier in a series since both attack underneath zones but from different angles, forcing linebackers to guess.

Use Stick on second and short or third and medium since the quick timing routes get the ball out before pressure arrives and convert manageable distances.

Mix in Power Read on early downs to keep defenses honest against the run before coming back to Stick as a play-action look through formation familiarity.
