Mtn Inside Zone is the base run play out of the Wide Normal Y Off set in Shotgun, giving you a true inside zone blocking scheme with the offensive line stepping in unison to the play side and combo blocking down to seal the front. The RB reads the double team at the point of attack and presses the mesh point before choosing between the bang, bend, or bounce lane based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and undisciplined gap defenders, and the primary read progression is the frontside double team into the backside linebacker fit, letting the back cut back if the defense over pursues.
Watch the Mike linebacker's alignment pre-snap, a stacked or crashing Mike signals a strong run fit that can blow up the frontside gap Identify if the defense is in a one gap or two gap front, one gap fronts with fast flowing linebackers are more susceptible to cutback lanes Look for user-controlled defensive tackles shooting gaps immediately after the snap, this often opens the backside cutback that the RB should read Check safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are at depth in a two high shell the box is likely light and inside zone has room to work Beware of odd fronts with a nose tackle head up on the center paired with blitzing linebackers, this combination can clog both the bang and bend lanes and force a negative play
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a clean numbers advantage
Use the RB's natural vision by letting the play develop instead of manually juking immediately at the mesh point, since inside zone rewards patience
Pair this with Mtn RPO Read Y Flat and Mtn RPO Alert Power to keep linebackers honest and force them to respect both the run and the quick game off the same look
Call this on early downs in normal or base personnel fronts where the defense shows a two high shell with linebackers at depth, since that usually means fewer immediate gap fills
Mix in Mtn Lead Outside Zone from the same set to attack edges once the defense starts crashing hard on inside zone tracks
Avoid this against heavy 4-3 under fronts with a stacked Mike linebacker unless you have a clear cutback lane called via a hot route or blocking adjustment
