Breakdown

Quick Slants out of Shotgun Trips Y Slot Str is a rhythm passing concept built to get the ball out fast against man and zone alike. The two trips receivers to the left run stacked slants breaking hard to the inside, with the outside trips receiver working underneath the inner slant route to occupy the shallow zone or rub off man defenders. On the backside, the single receiver runs a slant across the field while the TE/slot defender near him releases on a quick out breaking route to the flat, giving the QB a two way go if the backside slant gets jumped. The primary read starts with the backside slant since it is the fastest developing route, then progresses to the trips side slants working from outside in if the backside is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Look for cornerbacks playing outside shade pre-snap, this leverage tells you the slants have a clean inside lane to work with. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow zone drops from Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sink zone can undercut the inside slants if they read the QB's eyes quickly. User-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow hook zone are the biggest threat to this concept, spy for a lurking Mike linebacker before committing to the trips side throws. Cover 2 man or press man corners without safety help over the top get beaten easily since the slants create instant separation on the break. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge are neutralized by the quick throw timing, but watch for a delayed blitzer crashing the backside slant lane since that route has minimal blocking help.

Usage Tips

Get the ball out within your first two reads since every route breaks within two to three steps off the line, this is not a play to hold onto the football.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking cornerback depth on the trips side, tight press alignment usually means the slants will win against outside leverage.

Use the backside slant as a hot route answer versus blitz looks since it is the quickest developing throw and beats man coverage off a clean release.

Pair this play with HB Sweep or Inside Zone from the same set to keep run fits honest, then come back to Quick Slants once the defense starts cheating linebackers into the box.

Attack third and short or second and medium situations with this play since the quick timing routes convert distance without exposing the QB to pressure.
