Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment since Dagger is designed to attack Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells by clearing out the middle of the field with the vertical route. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop or a blitz call opens the dig route immediately for an easy completion. User the deep safety and key his eyes on the quarterback, if he commits to the dig route drop him down to jump the underneath window before the ball arrives. Two high shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 can shut this down if the corners squeeze the vertical release and the safeties stay deep, forcing the quarterback to check down to the comeback or running back. Look for slot cornerback or nickel defender depth pre-snap, if he is playing tight man coverage on the dig runner, that route gets contested and the play relies more heavily on the vertical or backside comeback.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick alignment check to identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties before the snap, since Dagger thrives against single high looks where the deep safety has to choose between the vertical and other threats.
If you see Cover 2 or a two deep shell, prioritize the dig route over the middle since it settles into the seam between the underneath zone and the deep half defenders.
Hot route the running back into a quick flare or check down if you anticipate a blitz, since the diagram shows him staying home as protection and you want an emergency valve against pressure.
