HB Dive out of Shotgun Open Flex is a pure between-the-tackles run play designed to attack the A-gap quickly before the defense can flow. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with double teams at the point of attack, and the HB takes a direct handoff from the shotgun, reading the interior gap created by the center and guard. This is a downhill run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the HB is to press the A-gap first, then bounce to the B-gap if a defender fills inside.
Pre-snap, identify the linebacker depth and alignment since stacked or blitzing linebackers over the A-gap will clog this run immediately. Check for a walked-up safety in the box, which signals run support and makes this play riskier against heavy fronts. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and nose to see if they get push or get sealed, since penetration up the middle kills this play before it starts. This play is most effective against base 4-3 or nickel fronts with light boxes and struggles badly against 46 or 3-4 overload fronts stacked to stop the run. Watch for user-controlled linebackers flowing downhill immediately at the snap, since a quick shooter in the A-gap forces the HB to bounce outside where blocking is not designed to hold up.
Use HB Dive on early downs or short yardage situations like 3rd and 1 to keep defenses honest against your RPO Read Y Flat and RPO Read WR Screen calls out of the same formation. Check the box count pre-snap and only run this play into light boxes with six or fewer defenders to avoid stacked fronts. Pair this play with RPO Alert Cntr Screen and RPO Cntr Alert Screen in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the interior run and the perimeter screen threat from identical formation looks. If the defense shows a blitz look with linebackers creeping to the line, consider hot routing your TE to a quick chip release for extra protection or checking to a different play at the line. Attack aggressive linebackers who key the mesh point too fast by using play-action shots off this same look later in the game once they bite.
