Breakdown

Z Spot is a classic Spot concept run from Shotgun Normal Flex Snug with 11 personnel, built specifically to beat Cover 3 and other zone shells. To the field side you get a deep vertical clear-out from the outside receiver, an underneath spot route settling in the void, and a corner route from the slot working outside the numbers, while the backside receiver runs a deep out at roughly 12 yards to hold the flat defender. The running back releases from the backfield on a shallow drag underneath, crossing the field to give you a checkdown against blitz or a natural man beater against banjo coverage. Primary read starts with the spot route sitting down in the underneath zone window, then progresses to the corner route if the flat defender jumps the spot, with the drag as the built-in answer versus pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: a single high safety with the corners playing off suggests Cover 3, which is exactly what this concept is designed to beat. Post-snap, key the flat defender or curl-to-flat linebacker: if he sits on the spot route, throw the corner behind him, and if he widens with the corner, hit the spot underneath. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, since he can jump the drag route or undercut the spot if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 4 or quarters shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the corner route throwing lane, so be ready to check down to the drag or backside out route. Man pressure with a blitz off the edge is the main counter, so read the running back's drag route as the built-in answer versus nano blitzes or overload pressure looks.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or a single high shell, since the spot and corner combo is designed to exploit that flat defender conflict.

If you see man coverage instead, look immediately to the drag route from the running back or the deep out on the backside for a quick throw before pressure arrives.

Use motion or a hot route on the vertical clear-out receiver to widen the deep third defender and open more room for the corner route behind him.

This play pairs well with All Curl or Whips Curls in the same set, since both attack similar zone landmarks and let you stay in rhythm without tipping your hand.

Best called on second or third and medium, where the spot route sitting at the sticks gives you a high floor conversion option with the corner as the home run shot.
