Inside Zone out of Shotgun Normal Flex Snug is a straightforward zone run play with the RB aligned offset and a lead blocker mixed into the backfield look. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison to the play side and reading the defensive front to determine cut lanes, while the TE and both flexed WRs are not shown running routes, keeping the focus purely on the ground game. This is a zone run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is the RB reading his blockers from the play side gap, checking the frontside cutback lane first before working backside if the defensive front flows hard.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a run-heavy front with linebackers stacked tight to the box or a lighter nickel look that favors the run. Look for safety rotation, if both safeties are deep in a two high shell, the box is lighter and this run has more room to develop. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard with the zone blocking, the cutback lane behind him is where the RB should look to break the run. Watch for a user-controlled defender crashing down early off the edge or shooting a gap, as this can blow up inside zone if the RB does not adjust his aiming point. Heavy blitz packages with linebackers stacked and crashing pre-snap are the biggest threat to this play, so be ready to check the play or audible if you see extra defenders loading the box.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs (first and second down) when you need to establish tempo and keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy calls in this set. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box, this is a green light run with numbers in your favor. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are creeping up expecting run, consider audibling to a play-action shot off this same look instead. Pair this call with PA All In or PA Whips Curls from the same formation so the defense cannot sit on run tendencies once they see this personnel and alignment. Against aggressive user blitzers, let the zone blocking work and trust the RB to find the natural cutback rather than forcing him into a predetermined gap.
