Breakdown
RPO Zone Alert out of Shotgun Monster (11 personnel) shows a run/pass alert built off three isolated route reads on the perimeter. The left slot runs a quick out breaking to the boundary, the middle receiver runs an in-breaking slant across the formation, and the right slot runs a quick out breaking back toward the formation. This is a true RPO: the quarterback reads the second level defenders on the run action, and if the linebackers or flat defenders bite on the run fake, he pulls the ball and works the slant/out combo. Primary read progression starts with the inside slant, then works to the near-side out route based on which side the defense leaves vacated.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap: stacked or crashing linebackers signal the run key defenders you want to read post-snap for the give/pull decision. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap since single high defenses often commit more bodies to the box, making the pass side of the RPO more lucrative. Post-snap, key the flat defender or curl-flat zone defender on the side of the near out route since a hard flat drop takes away that quick throw. Watch for a user linebacker spying the slant window or sitting in the shallow hook zone as a lurking threat that can jump the inside route. This concept struggles against disciplined zone drops that stay square to the run fake or against teams that trigger fast run blitzes without opening throwing lanes.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and if you see six or more defenders stacked in the box, favor the pass side of the RPO immediately.
Use the slant as your first live read since it attacks any linebacker who steps up hard on run flow.
If the defense shows off-man or soft zone on the outside receivers, hot route the near out route to a speedout or quick hitch to win before the corner can close.
Pair this play with Fk WR Screen to punish teams that key on the run fake and crash the edge defenders.
Best called on early downs (1st or 2nd and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to sell out against the run look.
