Fk WR Screen out of Shotgun Monster is a play action fake tied to a wide receiver screen concept on the right side. The play design shows a fake handoff selling run action while the outside receiver on the right sits at the line then releases outward for the screen with a blocker peeling out ahead of him, while the receiver stacked behind runs a vertical release upfield to hold the corner and safety. On the left side the slot runs a quick out and the outside receiver pushes vertical, giving you a built in backside answer if the screen is taken away. The primary read is the WR screen to the right first, working back to the vertical shot on the left if defenders crash down on the screen action.
Check the strong safety depth pre snap, if he is sitting shallow near the line he is likely keying run and can jump the screen for a big loss. Watch the flow of linebackers after the snap, if they flow hard to the play action fake the screen lane opens up on the right immediately. Man coverage with press corners struggles against this because the blocker gets a clean angle on the screen defender once he commits upfield. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 can be an issue if the cornerback sits and reads the screen quickly, so be ready to check to the backside vertical route. User controlled defenders lurking near the flat on the screen side are the biggest threat, if you see a user drop down early consider working the backside slot out route instead.
Sell the run fake with a patient snap count so linebackers bite on the play action before you flip to the screen side.
Use this on early downs or in 2nd and short to disguise as a run and punish defenses that key run blitzes or crash the box.
If the defense shows man coverage press at the line, hot route the backside vertical receiver into a slant to speed up the second read.
Pair this with RPO Zone Alert in the same set so linebackers have to respect both the run key and the screen bubble before committing.
Watch for slot cornerback blitzes off the screen side edge, if you see that pre snap get the ball out on the screen quickly before the blocker gets beat.
