Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker on the play side before the snap, if they are lined up wide and squeezed down this run has a natural crease off tackle. Check linebacker depth, stacked linebackers sitting tight to the line signal a run blitz that can blow up this play before the halfback gets to the hole. Look for safeties rotating down into the box post-snap since an extra defender in the alley kills the off tackle lane and forces a cutback. Man coverage on the backend with single high safety usually means lighter boxes, which favors this run, while two high shells with linebackers reading run fits will clog the point of attack. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from depth are the biggest threat, so if you see a defender crashing hard pre-snap, expect the cutback lane to be the answer.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light fronts with six or fewer defenders in the box. Look for linebackers cheating outside pre-snap since that tells you to cut the run back inside the tackle instead of bouncing it. Use this play on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, to keep the defense honest against your play-action shots. Pair this with Inside Zone from the same set so defenses cannot sit on one gap scheme, then mix in HB Slip Screen when you see linebackers flowing hard downhill. Motion is not shown here, so rely on the pre-snap alignment of the defensive line and linebacker depth to decide your point of attack rather than any hot route adjustments.
