Verticals out of Shotgun Empty Triple Stack sends five receivers vertical to attack every deep zone at once, with the two outside receivers on skinny posts up the seams and the two stack receivers pushing straight up the numbers while the fifth man runs a wide crossing route from the far side all the way to the opposite boundary. There is no run blocking since this is an empty backfield, so it is a pure drop back passing concept designed to stress both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells. The primary read is the seam route to the play side stack, working to the deep crosser underneath if the safety rotates over the top.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment since that dictates which vertical route wins. Check cornerback depth: if corners are playing off coverage at seven or more yards, the seam and post routes have less separation on the catch point but more room after the catch. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers can jump the crossing route if it is the first read and the quarterback stares it down. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets torched by the skinny posts, so look for a user controlled safety sprinting to double the post side stack receiver. Zone defenses with a deep half rotation to the stack side will squeeze the seam throw, so if you see the safety cheating toward the trips or stack side before the snap, expect that rotation and work the field crosser instead.
Use this play on early downs or obvious passing situations where you have time to let routes develop since all four verticals take time to clear the linebackers. Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two deep safeties split evenly it is a Cover 2 beater, so target the seams between the corner and safety. If the safety shell shows single high, work the skinny posts against Cover 3 since they split the difference between the corner and free safety. Hot route the shallow crosser into a deeper dig if you are facing a two high shell that clamps down on the underneath crossing route. Pair this play with QB Power RPO on early downs to keep the defense honest against the run, then call Verticals once you see linebackers creeping into the box on early down tendencies. Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out on rhythm to the crosser since the deep routes take too long to develop versus a fast pass rush.
