Read Option out of Shotgun Bunch Open is a true zone-read run play built off a mesh point between the QB and HB just behind the line. The bunch trio to the left stays in to block or release late, while the single receiver split wide right runs off his corner to hold the deep defender, leaving the edge defender as the read key. The QB reads the crashing end or OLB at the mesh point: give the ball on an inside track if that defender flows outside, or pull and attack the alley if he stays home.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive end or OLB aligned over the read side, if he sits and waits for the QB he is playing the option correctly and forces a tough pull decision. Man coverage on the bunch receivers with no extra run support in the box is where this play thrives, since blockers get clean releases and the backside is thin. A safety cheating down into the box pre-snap is the biggest red flag, that extra body in the run fit usually kills both the give and pull options. Zone coverage with linebackers staying square and reading backfield flow can close the mesh point cutback lane quickly, so look for scraping linebackers post-snap. A contained edge blitz or scrape exchange call defeats this concept, since it forces the QB to make a rushed give or pull decision under pressure right at the mesh point.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, lean toward pulling and bouncing outside rather than forcing the give.
Identify the read defender immediately after the snap, usually the widest edge player on the line, and freeze him with your eyes before committing.
Use the single receiver's release to bait the corner into outside leverage, which opens the pull lane if the defense rotates a safety down.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same Bunch Open set so the defense has to respect both the mesh read and a straight downhill run look.
Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are still guessing between run and pass fits out of bunch sets.
