Breakdown

PA Crossers out of Pistol Weak is a play-action passing concept built around two deep crossing routes that stretch the field horizontally. From the diagram, the two receivers on the left run crossing routes at different depths, one sitting in a shallow to intermediate cross while the other pushes deeper across the field, and the isolated receiver on the right runs a deep dig or crossing route breaking back toward the middle. This is a man beater at its core, since the crossing routes create natural traffic and rub off defenders trailing in man coverage, but the deep in-breaking route on the right also gives you a window against zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser underneath, then works to the deeper crosser, and finishes on the backside dig if the middle of the field opens up after the play-action hold.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners pressed or bailing hard, since that tells you the crossers will have room once they clear traffic. Watch safety depth before the snap, two deep safeties usually means zone drops underneath that can squeeze the shallow crosser, while a single high safety often signals man coverage that the crossing routes exploit. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flowing toward the crossing routes early, since that is a lurk read designed to jump the intermediate throw. Look for linebackers staying at a shallow depth after the play-action fake, since that hard run-flow window is exactly what the crossers are designed to exploit for big yardage. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers at depth and safeties over the top, so if you see a two-high shell with underneath zone defenders sitting, expect the throwing windows on the crossers to close quickly.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action fake fully before checking your first read, since the crossers need time to develop and clear the underneath linebackers.

Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are more likely to bite on run action out of Pistol Weak personnel.

Pre-snap, look for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight over your receivers, since the crossing traffic will win against man almost every time.

If you see two deep safeties and soft zone underneath, hot route the shallow crosser into a shorter option or check it down to the play-action protection instead of forcing the deep cross into a lurking linebacker.

Pair this with HB Zone Wk or F Lead Read Option earlier in a drive to get defenses biting on run fits, then dial up PA Crossers to hit the crossing routes behind a hard-flowing front seven.
