PA Power O out of Maryland I Tight Close sells the Power O run action with a play-action fake before releasing three routes into a vertical stretch. The backside receiver runs a deep out breaking hard to the flag area, the tight end or fullback runs a corner route into the deep third, and the outside receiver on the play side runs a deep in cutting across the middle of the field. This is a man beater built to attack single-high looks, with the primary read progressing from the deep corner route as the go-to shot, down to the crossing in-route working the middle if the corner is capped, then to the flat out route as the checkdown against a hard close.
Identify single-high safety alignment pre-snap, this tells you the corner route has room to work against man coverage on the outside. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the play-action fake the crossing in-route will have a wide throwing lane behind them. Key the flat defender or user-controlled corner, if he sinks with the out route the quarterback should climb the progression to the deep in-route instead. Look for two-high shells or cover 2 concepts, these take away the deep corner route and force the check down to the shorter routes. Beware of aggressive blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play-action fake slows the quarterback's drop and increases sack risk against a hot blitz.
Run this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel counts to keep the play fake honest against linebackers who are keying run fits.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single-high shell the corner route has a clear window to attack the deep third.
Use the crossing in-route as your primary answer against two-high shells since the corner route will be capped by a deep half defender.
Pair this play with Power O and HB Blast in your play-calling sequence so the defense commits to the run fit before you hit them with the play-action shot.
Motion or shift the formation pre-snap to confirm man coverage, then trust the corner route to win one-on-one against outside corners in trail technique.
