HB Blast out of the Heavy set in Maryland I is a downhill power run play built around a fullback iso block, with 32 personnel giving you two backs and two tight ends up front for max blocking numbers. The offensive line and fullback create a lead blocker isolation on the play side linebacker, sealing the point of attack so the HB can hit the hole with one cut and get downhill immediately. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read for the ball carrier is the fullback's block: key the FB's lead block on the mike or play side backer, then decide bounce, bang, or bend based on how that iso block plays out.
Watch the safety alignment before the snap: two high safeties usually means a lighter box, which is a green light to run HB Blast since your fullback iso block has a numbers advantage. If you see a single high safety with linebackers crashing down pre-snap, that is a run blitz key and this play can get blown up before the fullback gets a clean shot at the mike. Track linebacker depth: backers sitting tight to the line at 3 to 4 yards are keying run and will fill the iso gap fast, so be ready to bounce outside if the user takes control of the mike. User-controlled defenders flying downhill on the play side backer spot is the biggest threat, since a good iso read fake by the fullback can freeze them just enough to open the seal. Against goal line or heavy run-stopping fronts with 8 in the box, this play loses to gap discipline and extra hats at the point of attack, so mix in Power O or QB Sneak to keep the defense honest.
Use HB Blast in short yardage and goal line situations where you have numbers in the box and need a hard-nosed gap to move the chains or punch it in.
Check the defensive front pre-snap: if the defense shows a light box with 6 or fewer defenders, this play wins immediately because your iso blocker has a clean angle on the mike.
If the defense stacks the box with 8 or more defenders, consider audibling to HB Lead Dive or PA HB Wheel instead since blast will get gang tackled at the line.
Pair HB Blast with Power O and PA Power O in the same drive to keep defenders guessing between gap schemes and misdirection out of the same Maryland I look, since both plays share blocking landmarks but attack timing differently.
Hot route the second tight end into a short flare or stay-block based on whether you see edge pressure creeping down, since Heavy personnel groups are common blitz targets.
