Heavy

Overview

Maryland I Heavy is the most condensed look in the formation, trading the split receiver for an extra blocker and packing 32 personnel (three backs, two tight ends) into a phone booth. Where the base Maryland I sets keep a receiver detached to hold a corner and stretch the box horizontally, Heavy pulls everything inside the numbers: two tight ends on the line, a fullback stacked behind the guard, and the halfback deep in the I. That alignment forces the defense to either commit safeties down into run support or accept a numbers disadvantage at the point of attack, and Madden's AI defense almost always answers with a heavier front and tighter safety depth.

Strengths

  • HB Blast and Power O both give you a pulling lineman into a double team at the point of attack, which is the most reliable way to break Madden's run fits when the defense is not committing an extra defender inside.
  • PA HB Wheel is a legitimate shot play off the same blocking shell: the linebacker who crashes the run action on Power O has no chance to carry the wheel, and it turns into a one on one against a safety or an isolated flat defender.
  • QB Sneak out of Heavy is close to automatic on short yardage since the extra blockers collapse the middle and give you a free surge on fourth and one or goal line snaps.
  • Tight end alignment lets you hot route a tight end on a drag or seam release to attack Cover 3 buzz zones without ever showing a spread look pre snap.
  • The condensed set baits opponents into base 4-3 or goal line personnel, which means slower defenders are on the field when you flip to a pass concept.

Weaknesses

  • No detached receiver means zero horizontal stretch, so a user controlled safety can sit inside and read the backfield without any threat of a vertical outside the numbers.
  • Interior nano blitzes and A gap pressure are a real problem because the fullback can only pick up one rusher, and the play action snaps hold the quarterback in place long enough for free hitters to arrive.
  • Opponents who recognize the Heavy tell will drop into goal line or 3-4 heavy fronts and slant inside, which kills HB Lead Dive and stuffs the interior gaps before the pull develops.
  • The passing menu is thin: two play action calls out of six plays means a competent user will sit on the run and dare you to throw.
  • Play action rollouts and quick game are absent, so if you fall behind schedule on second and long this set becomes unusable and forces an audible.

Usage Tips

Use Heavy on first and second down inside the ten and on any short yardage situation where you want the defense in run personnel and slow off the ball.

Read the safety depth pre snap: if both safeties are deeper than twelve yards, run Power O or HB Blast right at the front, and if one drops into the box, check to PA HB Wheel.

Motion a tight end across the formation before the snap to identify man coverage, then attack the vacated side with the pull on Power O.

Hot route the backside tight end on a seam or corner route out of the play action calls so you have an answer when the safety cheats down on the run action.

Keep QB Sneak in the back pocket for fourth and one or clock management situations where you want to keep the offense on the field without risking a fumble exchange.
