Defensive Reads
Identify the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, since a shallow drop signals he is keying run and will be vulnerable to the crossing routes. Watch for a single high safety alignment, which usually means man coverage underneath and tells you the crossers will win against trailing defenders. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, the flat defender and underneath zone droppers can squeeze the shallow drag, so be ready to climb the progression to the deep crosser instead. Look for blitz indicators like a walked-up linebacker or safety creeping into the box, since the HB flat route becomes your hot route answer against pressure. This play struggles against disciplined zone drops with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle, so avoid calling it into Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Palms with a spy underneath.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake by letting the play-action animation finish before moving off your primary read, since linebackers biting hard on run action opens huge throwing lanes for the crossers. Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like press corners or a single high safety, since the crossing routes will pick off man defenders trying to trail across the formation. If the defense shows two deep safeties, look to hit the shallow drag quickly before the flat defender can squeeze the window. Use hot routes to convert the deep dig into a corner route if you see Cover 3 rolling hard to one side, giving you a way to attack the vacated deep zone. Pair this play with HB Power O or HB Iso earlier in a drive to get linebackers cheating downhill, then dial up PA Level to punish that aggressiveness with the play-action fake.
