Breakdown

Redzone DT Drop is a defensive stunt look out of the 3-2 Swap Dbl Mug package within Dime Big Dime 4-1-6 personnel. It shows a double mug amoeba front at the line but drops a defensive tackle into an underneath zone spot instead of rushing, creating a de facto zone beater against quick game and pick routes that redzone offenses lean on. The primary read progression for the defense starts with identifying if the quarterback is working a hot route or slant/flat combo into the vacated DT drop zone, then reading the quarterback's eyes to the mugged linebackers to see if they blitz or bail into coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the quarterback checking to a hot route immediately at the line, that usually confirms he expects pressure and is exposed to the DT drop zone. Key the running back and tight end releases, if both stay in to chip protect it signals the offense also fears the mugged look and you can bail cleanly into your drop. Post-snap, track any user controlled receiver working shallow crossers or slants, the dropping defensive tackle should be sitting in that exact throwing lane. Against empty or spread formations this call struggles if the offense has enough vertical stems to clear out the shallow zone, so be ready to bail to Tampa 2 or Cover 3 Sky if you see empty backfield pre-snap. If the offense audibles to a run concept at the goal line, the mugged linebackers must fill fast since the DT drop removes an interior gap rusher.

Usage Tips

Disguise the mugged linebackers pre-snap by holding them at the line as long as possible so the quarterback cannot get a clean pre-snap red or blue coverage read.

Use this call inside the five yard line or on third and short redzone situations where offenses want to attack with quick pick concepts or rub routes.

Combine Redzone DT Drop with Nickel Sim 2 or SS Sim 2 in the same set to keep the same amoeba pre-snap picture while alternating between actual pressure and the DT drop disguise.

User the DT dropping into the zone if you want an extra body to jump underneath crossers or spot drop routes near the goal line.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Match or Cover 1 Games on early downs so opponents cannot key off your mugged front to predict blitz versus drop every snap.
