Cover 1 Hole is a man coverage defensive play out of the Big Nickel Over G set that puts five defenders on islands with a robber safety sitting in the middle of the field as the hole player. The diagram shows four underneath defenders bailing into short man drops, one deep defender (the blue oval) rotating over the top as the single high safety, and the green oval linebacker or hole defender sinking into the intermediate throwing lane to rob crossers and dig routes. With four X's showing blitz or contain rush lanes at the line, this is a five or six man pressure look designed to combine man coverage with a spy or robber concept underneath, making it a strong man beater killer against drag routes, slants and shallow crosses.
Defensive Reads
Read the running back and tight end release first, since Cover 1 Hole is vulnerable if both immediately release vertically and stress the single high safety with double verticals. Key the slot receiver alignment before the snap, if they are bunched or stacked expect crossing routes designed to pick your man defenders, which is exactly what the hole defender is there to rob. Watch for a quick out or flat route to the boundary, since man coverage with inside leverage can get beat on quick hitters to the sideline if your corner is playing off. Post-snap, keep eyes on the quarterback's first read and break on any in-breaking route before the receiver sits down in the void. This coverage struggles against pure four vertical concepts, so if the offense trips or empties out with all seams and posts, be ready to bail the hole defender into a deep zone drop instead of sitting shallow.
Usage Tips
Diagnose the offensive formation pre-snap and identify if there are two or more receivers stacked on one side, since the hole defender needs to sit in the throwing lane between those routes. Use the hole player as your primary user-controlled defender and manually rob any in-breaking route like a dig, drag or slant before it develops. Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect the quarterback to look for a quick man beater over the middle. Disguise your coverage by walking the safety down late to bait the quarterback into thinking it is a two deep shell, then rotate to single high at the snap. Pair this with Cover 1 Robber or a straight Cover 3 Match from the same Over G set so quarterbacks cannot key on the single high safety rotation.
