Set alignment for Over G from Big Nickel in Madden 27

Overview

Over G is a defensive set inside Big Nickel, and that matters because the play list is all coverage shells and pressure packages rather than route concepts. The 4-2-5 personnel puts four down linemen, two linebackers, and five defensive backs on the field, with the third safety (the strong safety or weak safety depending on the call) playing as a hybrid box defender. The "Over G" front slides the defensive line to the strength of the formation with a gap-exchange alignment, meaning your two interior linemen are aligned in the A and B gaps toward the tight end side. That front shift changes which blitzers come free compared to under or standard alignments in Big Nickel, and it also changes how run fits play out against inside zone and duo.

Strengths

  • Deep coverage variety is elite: Cover 2 Man, Cover 3 Sky, Cover 3 Match, Cover 3 Buzz Match, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 4 Palms, Cover 6, Cover 6 Invert, Cover 6 Trap, Cover 9, and Cover 1 Hole all come from the same shell, so you can run identical pre-snap looks and rotate late without tipping the call.
  • The third safety in 4-2-5 gives you a box defender with real coverage ability, which means you defend 12 personnel run games and seam routes with the same package instead of subbing between base and nickel.
  • The Over G front shift creates natural free rushers on the WS Blitz 1, WS Blitz 2, WS Blitz 3, SS Blitz 2, and SS Blitz 3 calls because the slide occupies the guard and center, letting the safety come through the vacated gap.
  • Cover 6 Invert and Cover 4 Palms are strong answers to the corner and out routes that beat standard Cover 3, and both hold up against flood concepts to the field side.
  • Casino Blitz, Pinch Blitz, and Corner Blitz 3 give you three distinct pressure sources (interior, edge, and boundary corner) out of a shell that looks identical pre-snap.

Weaknesses

  • The gap-slide alignment leaves the weak side B gap light, so counter, split zone, and pin and pull toward the away side hit for chunk yardage if you do not manually shade linemen back.
  • Only two linebackers means crossing route concepts and drag and dig combos over the middle stress your hook defenders, especially if you user the safety and leave the second linebacker on AI logic.
  • The safety blitz plays (SS Blitz 2, SS Blitz 3, WS Blitz 1 through 3) all pull a defender out of the deep or box zone, and opponents who identify the pressure man pre-snap can hot route a back to the vacated flat or run a quick slant behind him.
  • Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Buzz Match give up the hole shot between the corner and the deep middle safety, which is the standard answer to Cover 3 in Madden.
  • Five defensive backs against heavy sets is a real liability if the opponent goes to 22 personnel and runs power at the light side of the Over G front.

Usage Tips

Use Over G as your primary front against 12 and 13 personnel, since the 4-2-5 keeps enough coverage on the field to handle a receiving tight end while the front slide still holds up against tight zone.

Show the same shell every snap and rotate post-snap: base out of Cover 3 Sky, then flip to Cover 2 Man or Cover 6 Invert on the same pre-snap look so opponents cannot pattern read your safeties.

On third and long, pair Casino Blitz or Pinch Blitz with a manual shade of the defensive line to whichever side the running back is offset, since the offense will slide protection away from him.

User the strong safety or a linebacker on all the Cover 4 and Cover 6 calls so you can cap the seam and rally to drags, but never user the free safety on Cover 1 Hole because the AI covers the middle better than a human moving laterally.

Against 3x1 trips, check to Cover 6 or Cover 6 Trap rather than Cover 3 Match, because the quarters side handles the vertical stem while the boundary corner keeps outside leverage on the isolated receiver.
