Breakdown

Cover 2 Lurk is a zone-based defensive call out of the 3-3-5 3 High Over set that pairs a traditional two deep safety shell with an underneath lurk defender sitting in the intermediate throwing lanes. The two deep safeties split the field to take away vertical shots down the sideline while the lurk linebacker or nickel defender reads the quarterback's eyes and jumps shallow crossers, drags, and curl routes that offenses use to attack the underneath voids in standard Cover 2. This is a zone beater killer against spot concepts and slot fades, and your primary read progression as the defender is deep safeties first to eliminate the vertical threat, then the lurk defender keys the quarterback's shoulders to jump the in-cut or drag route before it develops.

Defensive Reads

Watch the quarterback's presnap motion and receiver splits to identify if the offense is running mesh or drag concepts that the lurk defender is designed to jump. Post snap, key the tight end or slot receiver crossing the field since this is the primary route the lurk defender should be sitting on and undercutting. This coverage shuts down shallow crossers, spot concepts, and curl flat combos that rely on soft underneath zones, but it can be exposed by four verticals or deep post shots if the two deep safeties are not disciplined with their landmarks. Look for offenses using play-action rollouts to hold the lurk defender and safeties in place before attacking the vacated middle of the field. If the quarterback stares down the flat route immediately after the snap, that is your cue to jump the throw with the underneath defender since he is baiting the two deep shell.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the flat and curl zones with spot or stick concepts. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is aligning three receivers to one side, since the lurk defender needs to shade toward the strength of the formation to jump the crossing routes. User the lurk defender yourself if you want full control over baiting the quarterback into a throw, then close on the ball as soon as his eyes lock onto the intermediate route. Mix this call with Tampa 2 and Cover 2 Match from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on the deep safety spacing or the underneath lurk threat before the snap. Avoid calling this against heavy four verticals looks since the two deep safeties can get stressed if the lurk defender bites too hard on a shallow route and vacates his zone integrity too early.
