West Coast Power Run
“The West Coast Power Run creates weakness in the defense by stretching it out horizontally with short passing. The half backs then attack those weaknesses for big gains.”
Strengths
- Excellent at controlling clock with power runs and horizontal passing
- Strong at maintaining leads through physical, sustained drives
- Effective at exploiting defensive weaknesses created by spacing
Weaknesses
- Limited comeback potential with balanced, methodical approach
- Can struggle with big play potential for quick scores
- Requires improviser QB to maximize play-calling effectiveness
Emphasis
Power running game
Play Style
The West Coast Power Run offense uses horizontal passing to stretch defenses thin before attacking the running lanes created by that spacing. By spreading receivers across the field and executing quick, short passes, the offense forces defensive players to widen their coverage zones, leaving gaps in the middle of the field. Once the defense has committed to covering the width of the field, power running plays can attack those weakened areas with physical linemen and power backs who excel at running through contact.
Improviser quarterbacks thrive in this system, as they must recognize when defenses have been stretched thin enough to make power runs effective. The offense can start drives with horizontal passing to establish spacing, then transition to power runs once the defense has adjusted. Power backs in this scheme benefit from the spacing created by the passing attack, as they often face lighter defensive boxes or defenders who are out of position after covering receivers in the flat. The combination of horizontal passing and power running creates a complementary attack where each element makes the other more effective, forcing defenses to defend both the width and physicality of the offense simultaneously.

Other Offensive Schemes
Air Raid
A variant of spread, Air Raid gives the quarterback control of the play at the line of scrimmage. The offense focuses on passing plays but trusts the quarterback to diagnose the defense and call audibles when running lanes open up.
Multiple Power Run
The Multiple Power Run uses traditional pulling linemen and lead blockers in the run gameto grind through defenses. A quality Field General QB helps conert critical 3rd and short situations
Multiple Zone Run
The multiple zone scheme is a balanced offense that is very difficult for the defense to predict. The team can run out of multiple receiver sets and throw out of power formations.
