Overview

6-2-3 is a goal line defensive personnel group that puts six defensive linemen, two linebackers, and three defensive backs on the field, trading all coverage depth for maximum interior gap control. It is the counter to heavy offensive personnel (22, 23, and jumbo sets), giving you enough bodies to spill every A and B gap so a fullback dive or QB sneak has nowhere to fall forward. Because you only carry three defensive backs, offenses that answer with three or four receivers force you into man coverage with a linebacker or safety on a slot, which is exactly the matchup you have to user-cover or check out of before the snap.

Strengths

  • Six down linemen create double-team-proof gap integrity at the goal line, so inside zone and FB dive runs get stonewalled at the line of scrimmage without needing linebacker fills.
  • QB sneaks and quarterback power lose almost all value against this front because the interior is already outnumbered at the point of attack.
  • Only two linebackers means both can be assigned as pure run-through blitzers, and user-controlling one lets you time the snap and shoot a gap for a tackle for loss.
  • Defensive line pass rush moves get generated instantly against play-action and rollouts since offensive lines in heavy personnel rarely have enough athletic blockers to slide protect against six rushers.
  • Pre-snap pinch and crash line adjustments plus a defensive line shift make it easy to overload the strong side against a pulling guard or lead blocker.

Weaknesses

  • Three defensive backs cannot handle spread personnel, so any offense that motions out to trips or empty leaves a defensive lineman or linebacker responsible for a receiver in coverage.
  • Zone coverage is effectively unusable at depth: there is no one to carry a corner fade, back shoulder throw, or seam route, so fade concepts and corner routes to the pylon are near automatic completions.
  • Play-action and hard flat rollouts drag the front upfield, and the boot side has no defender assigned to the flat, which turns a QB rollout into a walk-in score.
  • Slow linebackers and defensive linemen with low man coverage ratings get flagged as instant mismatches when offenses bring a fast tight end or receiver into the formation.
  • Opponents who see this personnel know you are in a run-stop shell, so they simply audible to a pass concept and your only real answer is a coverage-based check or burning a timeout.
