Overview
The 6-2-3 is a goal line defensive personnel group that puts six defensive linemen, two linebackers, and three defensive backs on the field, and it appears in the Goal Line Defense Pinch and 6-2 sets. It creates a wall of interior gap control built to stuff heavy offensive packages like 22, 23, and jumbo personnel inside the 5 yard line, where every A and B gap is filled at the snap. Offenses facing this look must choose between running into a stacked front or spreading out to exploit only three coverage defenders, which forces them to use motion, bunch releases, and quick pass concepts to find a numbers advantage.
Strengths
- Six down linemen win the gap count against almost any run formation, letting you shut down inside zone, dive, and QB sneak without committing a safety to the box
- The Pinch set slants the line inward to collapse the A and B gaps instantly, making short yardage power runs and goal line pushes nearly impossible to convert
- Heavy defensive line weight and high block shedding ratings overwhelm jumbo offensive line packages, creating penetration for tackles for loss before the RB reaches the line
- Two linebackers behind a six man front can be user controlled as free hitters, letting you shoot the gap the RB picks or spy a mobile QB on read option looks
- Compressed field near the goal line limits route depth, so three DBs can cover the short area in Cover 1 or Cover 0 without getting beaten over the top
Weaknesses
- Only three defensive backs means spread or trips formations create immediate numbers mismatches, and a single audible to a quick slant or fade can leave a receiver uncovered
- Slow defensive linemen and linebackers get exposed on outside runs, toss plays, and jet sweeps where speed to the edge beats the interior focused alignment
- Play action and TE leak concepts punish linebackers who crash on run fakes, leaving flat and corner routes wide open in the end zone
- Smart opponents key on the substitution pattern and hurry up with 11 or 10 personnel, forcing you to stay in a mismatch or burn a timeout to adjust
- Man coverage assignments against bunch and stack releases often result in picks and rubs, and the lack of extra DBs removes the option to bracket or double the best receiver
