Scene 44-7 is a Wildcat direct snap run play out of the Ace Y Off set with 11 personnel, designed to attack the edge with the ball-carrying quarterback taking the direct snap. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard around to lead through the hole while the playside tackle and tight end wall off the edge defender, creating a numbers advantage on the perimeter. The primary read progression starts with the playside gap, then bounces outside off the pulling lineman's block if the alley is clogged, with cutback lanes available if the linebackers overpursue.
Check the box count before the snap. A light box with six or fewer defenders in the run fit tells you this play has a clean lane. Watch for the strong safety cheating down into the box, which signals run support and should trigger a bounce to the opposite edge. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end. If he crashes hard inside, the edge should open for the pulling guard's block. Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing fast to the ball. Overaggressive flow creates cutback lanes behind the pulling blocker. This play struggles against gap-sound run defenses with a spy or extra man in the box, so avoid calling it into heavy or 46 fronts that stack the line of scrimmage.
Use this play when the defense shows a light box or has substituted out run-stopping personnel, since the Wildcat snap often catches defenses in nickel or dime looks.
Attack early down and distance situations like first and ten or second and short, where defenses are less likely to load the box against the Wildcat formation.
Pair this with Scene 44-5 in the same set to keep the defense guessing between two different Wildcat run concepts, forcing linebackers to respect multiple gap threats before the snap.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap. If they are stacked tight to the line, hot route the tight end into a lead block adjustment to seal the edge defender.
Take manual control of the pulling guard after the snap to manually engage the first defender in the alley rather than trusting the AI block, especially against aggressive user linebackers.
