WR Hook Outs from the Split Backs 3WR set sends the backside X on a deep hook that settles and works back to the sideline, while the two receivers to the strong side run a hook out combo: the inside slot breaks in on a hook then the outside Z pushes vertical before snapping outward to the boundary. No route is shown from the backfield, so this is a straight dropback pass with the offensive line staying in to protect. This is primarily a zone beater, using hooks to sit in the underneath windows and outs to attack the flat once the underneath defenders commit, with the primary read progression going from the strong side hook to the out breaking route, then over to the backside hook.
Watch for linebackers sinking too deep into hook zones, since that opens the throwing lane for the out breaking routes underneath them. Zone coverage with soft cornerback alignment gets exposed by the outs, especially cover 3 and cover 4 shells where corners are reading run first. Press man coverage on the outside receivers is the best counter, since the hook route has no separation move built in and can get jumped by a physical corner playing inside leverage. Key the flat defender post snap, since a user controlled defender sitting on the out route can bait the quarterback into a turnover if he jumps the route early. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can pressure this play fast since it relies on a full dropback with no quick game options, so check for overloaded fronts before the snap.
Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the hook routes give quarterbacks an easy layup if linebackers sink too deep. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing zone by checking linebacker depth and cornerback cushion, since hook outs struggles against man press with no built in separation move off the line. If you see man coverage, hot route the backside X hook into a quick slant or speed out to create separation instead of sitting in a route that lets a defender close. Combine this play with Curls Read Special to keep defenders guessing between hook and curl breakpoints out of the same personnel and formation look. Pair with Slants on early downs to condition the defense to jump underneath, then hit the out breaking routes on Hook Outs once corners start squatting on short routes.
