Breakdown
WR Corners out of the Split Backs 3WR set sends the outside receiver on the right on a hard corner route (the highlighted primary path) while the inside slot receiver on that side runs a shallow crossing route underneath. On the backside, both left receivers stack their routes with a corner from the outside receiver and an out route from the slot, while a running back releases into a shallow flat route underneath. This is a man beater at its core, using the corner routes to attack outside leverage and the underneath crosser and flat route to clear space against man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the boundary corner route, works to the field corner if the safety rotates over, and checks down to the underneath flat or drag route against tight man coverage or blitz pressure.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, since Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells force you to throw the corner route with anticipation before the safety rotates over the top. Identify press man coverage on the outside receivers, which slows the corner release and makes the underneath crosser your first true option. Key on the flat defender and any linebacker showing blitz off the edge, since a nano blitz or overload pressure package will beat this play before the corners break outside. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a deep third defender sitting on the numbers, expect the corner route to get squeezed and look to the backside out route instead. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play wins most consistently, so trust the primary corner read when you see man leverage at the snap.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at safety depth and count defenders in the box before committing to the corner route side. If the corner shows single high, work the boundary corner route immediately since it beats Cover 3 and Cover 1 leverage. Hot route the underneath crosser into a quick drag or spot route if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, giving you an instant answer versus blitz. Pair this play with Slants or WR Hook Outs in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and vertical shots off similar formation looks. Best used on second and medium to second and long where the corner routes have room to develop before the pocket collapses.
