Inside Zone Split

Breakdown

Inside Zone Split is a base run play out of Singleback U Off Close with 12 personnel, giving you two tight ends to work zone combo blocks at the point of attack. The offensive line executes a split zone scheme where the backside tight end crosses the formation to kick out the edge defender or seal the backside linebacker, while the rest of the line zone steps and climbs to the second level. The primary read for the running back is the frontside double team at the point of attack, working through the A gap first and bouncing to the B or C gap based on how the linebackers flow and fill.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the linebacker depth and alignment, since stacked or tight linebackers get gashed easier by the split zone action than linebackers playing at depth with clean run fits. Watch the backside edge defender closely, since the crossing tight end is designed to kick him out, and if the defense sets a hard edge or uses a scrape exchange call, the cutback lane disappears. Look for run blitzes or nano blitz packages from the A or B gap, since a user-controlled linebacker shooting downhill untouched can blow this play up before the double team sets. Check safety alignment before the snap, if both safeties are rolled deep in a two high shell there is more room underneath for the backside cutback, but if one safety is sitting in the box expect a quicker fill on cutback lanes. Against odd fronts or 3-4 looks with a heavy nose tackle, this play struggles unless the tight end split action successfully removes the extra edge defender from the run fit.

Usage Tips

Run this against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts where the linebackers are stacked at depth and susceptible to zone flow misdirection. Use the split action to your advantage on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium distance, since the crossing tight end creates a natural conflict for over-pursuing linebackers. Pair this with PA Deep Cross or PA Deep Read later in the drive to punish defenders who start keying the split zone action and flowing hard to stop the run. If the defense shows a stacked box with eight or more defenders pre-snap, consider hot routing a tight end into a quick flat route or checking to Curl Flats instead. User the frontside guard or center as the play develops to seal off any blitzing linebacker shooting the A gap, since that is the primary threat to this concept. Sequence this with HB Dive early in a series to set up run fits, then hit this Inside Zone Split for a bigger gash once linebackers start cheating downhill.
