HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Slot WR Backfield is a designed screen pass that gets your HB out into open space behind a wall of blockers while the offensive line lets defenders flow upfield before releasing. This is a blitz beater and man beater by design, since aggressive pass rushers and man defenders chasing receivers downfield create the natural running lanes for your backfield blockers to seal. The primary read is simple: catch the HB out of the backfield, locate your lead blockers, and follow the alley they create rather than trying to make defenders miss in a phone booth.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 1 man with safeties rotating late, since these shells often trigger blitzes that this screen exploits. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: linebackers who crash hard upfield on run fits or blitz off the edge get sealed by your blockers and cannot recover. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in a lurk technique in the shallow zone, since a disciplined spy or lurking linebacker can jump the screen for a tackle for loss or interception. Look for nano blitzes or overload pressure packages that send extra rushers, since the aggressive pursuit angles from these blitzes are exactly what makes the screen blockers effective downfield. If the defense shows a two high safety look with linebackers sitting in shallow zone drops rather than rushing, expect the screen to be covered and consider audibling to a different concept from this set.
Call this play when you see pre-snap indicators of man coverage or blitz pressure, such as corners lined up tight on the slot WR or linebackers creeping toward the line of scrimmage.
Use it as a change of pace after running Inside Zone or HB Off Tackle a few times, since defenses keying on inside run action from this set will bite on the play fake elements and overpursue, opening bigger cutback lanes for the screen.
Avoid throwing this against zone drops with linebackers sitting short, since spy linebackers and disciplined zone defenders can read the screen and jump the throwing lane for a big loss or pick six.
On third and long, pair this with Dragon Spacing in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses honest between quick underneath zone beaters and the delayed HB screen, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drops.
Manually user your HB after the catch and press the stick toward the widest blocker to maximize yards after catch instead of running straight upfield into traffic.
