F Choice Spot is a Cover 3 beater built around the Spot concept, pairing a shallow flat route with an over-the-middle option route run by the F receiver, plus a corner or dig from the outside receiver to hold the deep third defender. The F receiver's choice route reads the underneath defender and settles or continues based on zone leverage, making this a classic zone beater rather than a strict man beater, though it holds up against man if you win the option route quickly. The primary read progression starts with the flat route to clear out the corner, then works to the F choice route sitting in the zone window, and finishes with the deep corner route as a shot if the safety bites underneath.
Pre-snap, check safety depth, if both safeties are deep at 10-plus yards you are likely facing Cover 2 or Cover 4, which changes the option route conversion point for the F receiver. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks into the underneath zone instead of widening, expect Cover 3 and let the choice route sit in the vacated area. Key the Mike linebacker's drop, a deep hook drop signals awareness of the option route and means you should climb the progression to the corner route instead of forcing the middle throw. Cover 1 or man-heavy blitz packages with no underneath help are the biggest threat, since a user spy or blitzer can undercut the choice route before it settles. If the defense shows a two-high shell that rotates to single-high after the snap, expect a disguised Cover 3, trust the flat-to-choice-to-corner read order and do not panic into a forced throw.
Use this play on second or third and medium when you expect a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell from the defense since the option route lives in the soft spot behind the linebackers.
Pre-snap, identify whether the Mike linebacker is sitting in the hook zone because that determines whether the F receiver should sit or continue on the choice route after the snap.
Hot route the flat runner to a quick out if you see a corner blitz coming from that side, this keeps the concept alive without needing to check to another play.
Pair this play with HB Quick Base or Dragon Spacing in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and this option route concept, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
Against aggressive user linebackers who jump the shallow routes, look immediately to the deep corner route since the underneath defender vacating creates a big window over the top.
