Punt Right is a situational special teams play from the Safety Kickoff formation used when your offense is backed up and forced to punt from deep in its own territory under safety kick rules. This is not a route concept or scheme play in the traditional sense, it is a directional punt call that shifts the punt coverage and kick angle toward the right side of the field. The primary read for the punter is simply to execute a controlled kick to the right hash or sideline, prioritizing hang time and coverage lane integrity over distance to pin the return man and limit big play potential.
Watch the return man depth and shade pre-snap, if he is aligned toward the left hash, Punt Right forces him to cross the field before he can start his return. Identify whether the return team is showing a safe return look or an aggressive overload return to one side, since this affects how much hang time you need on the kick. Post-snap, key on your outside coverage gunners getting a clean release, if they are getting jammed at the line the directional kick loses its value. Look for the return team shifting personnel or a blocker cheating toward the right sideline, which signals they anticipate the directional kick and are setting a wall. If the return man starts drifting right before the snap, consider switching to Punt Left or Punt Middle to keep the return unit honest and out of position.
Use Punt Right when the return man favors setting up returns to the left side of the field, forcing him to adjust to your coverage lanes instead of running his preferred path.
Check the return team alignment pre-snap and if you see the return man shaded left, directional kicking right increases the chance of a fair catch or a short return.
Pair this play in your call sequence with Punt Left and Punt Middle so you never become predictable, especially in critical late game field position battles.
In competitive play, favor Punt Right on 4th and long from your own territory when you need to flip field position and your coverage unit has speed advantages on the right edge.
Avoid overusing directional kicks in the same game without variation, since observant opponents will start pre-positioning their return man to counter the pattern.
