Build a Playbook That Fits Your Team

The best playbook is not your favorite team’s. It is the one built around your players. Eight steps from roster to a custom book you can rebuild in the game.

Your plays, your sections, inside the editor limits

Madden gives every team a playbook with hundreds of plays, and most players use a dozen of them. A custom playbook fixes that: fewer plays, each one chosen because it suits your roster and covers a situation you will actually face.

This guide works in the order that matters. Know your team, pick a scheme, choose formations and plays that fit it, then build the book. Each step links to the Madden Tools page that does the work for you.

Step1

Start with your roster, not the playbook

List what your team does best before you look at a single play.

The most common playbook mistake is picking the book your favorite team runs and then wondering why half the plays never work. A playbook should amplify your best players, so start there.

Write down your three best position groups and your weakest one. A fast slot receiver, a mobile quarterback, or a tight end who wins over the middle will each point you to different formations. A weak offensive line points you away from long-developing deep shots. Team Hub ranks every position group on every roster against the rest of the league, which is the fastest way to get this list right.

Step2

Match your roster to a scheme

Pick the offensive or defensive scheme your best players already fit.

Every Madden scheme wants specific archetypes: Air Raid wants an Improviser quarterback and Pass Protector linemen, Multiple Power Run wants a Power Back behind Power blockers, Tampa 2 wants zone corners and linebackers who can drop. When your players fit the scheme, they play above their overall.

Compare your roster from step 1 against the archetypes each scheme calls for. The scheme you pick here decides which formations belong in your book, so settle it before you move on.

Step3

Pick a base playbook to build from

Choose the team book whose formations already match your scheme.

You rarely need to start from nothing. Every team playbook in Madden leans toward a style, so find the one closest to your scheme and use it as your foundation. A pass-first scheme wants a book deep in Shotgun and Empty sets; a power scheme wants I-Form, Singleback and heavy personnel.

Playbooks Rookie

Know why a play works before you call it

Every play page carries a breakdown: the quarterback’s read progression, how to read the defense, strengths, weaknesses and usage tips. Plus tag and personnel filters across every book.

Step4

Choose formations by personnel

Keep formations that put your best eleven on the field together.

A formation is only as good as the players it puts on the field. If your second tight end is better than your third receiver, you want 12 personnel sets, not 11. Personnel pages group every formation and set by the package it uses, so you can see every option for the players you actually have. Full personnel browsing comes with Playbooks Rookie.

Step5

Cover every situation with tags

Make sure your book has an answer for third and short, red zone and two minute.

A good book is not your fifty favorite plays. It is the right play for each situation. Tags let you cut across every book by concept, so you can check that you have answers for man coverage, zone coverage, the blitz and the goal line before you lock anything in. Tag and personnel filters come with Playbooks Rookie.

Step6

Learn each play before you keep it

Only keep plays you know how to read against the coverage you will see.

A play you do not know how to read is a turnover waiting to happen. Every play page shows the full route diagram for free. Playbooks Rookie adds the breakdown: the quarterback's read progression, how to read the defense on it, and usage tips for when to call it. Cut anything you cannot explain in one sentence.

Step7

Build it in the Playbook Builder

Save your plays into your own book, organized your way, inside Madden’s editor limits.

This is where it comes together. The Playbook Builder lets you create named offense and defense books, add plays from any team's playbook with one tap from the play page, and organize them into your own sections: openers, third down, red zone, two minute.

Choose a rebuildable book and the builder keeps you inside Madden's custom playbook limits (15 formations, 56 sets, 500 plays), then gives you a build sheet grouped by formation and set so you can recreate it in the game without hunting through menus. Choose a study book instead to collect up to 2,000 plays for reference. Your books are saved to your account and work on any device.

Step8

Draft players who fit your playbook

In a fantasy draft, pick players for the scheme your book runs.

Starting a fantasy draft? Now you can do it in the right order: playbook first, then players. Filter the draft board by your scheme, and see which scheme fits are still on the board in later rounds in our best scheme fits guide.
