Best Scheme Fits for Your Fantasy Draft

Every scheme has players who fit it perfectly and still go in round 4 or later. Here are ten schemes, the stars worth an early pick, and the fits you can wait for.

Draft Genius strategy setup on a phone

Draft Genius drafts for your scheme, pick by pick

Scheme fit is the difference between a 90 overall player and a 90 overall player who plays like a 95 in your system. The problem is that fantasy drafts price players by overall, so the room drafts the same names no matter what scheme you run.

That is your edge. For each scheme below, "Take early" lists Perfect fits who typically go in rounds 1 and 2, and "Wait for" lists Perfect or Excellent fits whose typical pick is round 4 or later. Grades come from the Madden Tools scheme fit data, and rounds come from real fantasy drafts, both as of the Week 3 roster update.

Off1

Air Raid

Take your quarterback and a receiver early, then wait: the Pass Protector guards this scheme wants go in round 4 and later.

Air Raid puts the ball in your quarterback’s hands at the line and asks the interior line to hold up while slot receivers win quickly. Everyone drafts the passer and the receivers. Almost nobody drafts guards and centers for fit, which is where the value is.

Take early

  • Matthew Stafford QB 99Perfect · R1
  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba WR 99Perfect · R1

Wait for

  • Joe Thuney LG 96Perfect · R5
  • Aaron Brewer C 90Perfect · R4
  • Tyreek Hill WR 87Perfect · R4
Off2

Run and Shoot

Receivers who read coverage early, pass protectors later, and a Perfect-fit tight end in round 5.

Run and Shoot lets receivers adjust routes to the coverage they see, so it rewards smart pass catchers and a line built to pass protect. Its fit list is the deepest of any offense in this guide, which means patience pays.

Take early

  • Ja'Marr Chase WR 99Perfect · R1
  • Matthew Stafford QB 99Perfect · R1

Wait for

  • Chris Lindstrom RG 93Perfect · R4
  • Trey Smith RG 91Perfect · R4
  • Mark Andrews TE 90Perfect · R5

West Coast Zone Run

Possession tight ends are this scheme’s hidden value: two Perfect fits go in rounds 5 and 7.

West Coast Zone Run moves the ball with short passes and outside zone, and it leans on a possession tight end to move the chains. The market prices tight ends by overall, not by fit, so veterans who fit perfectly slide deep into the draft.

Take early

  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba WR 99Perfect · R1
  • Josh Allen QB 99Perfect · R1

Wait for

  • Mark Andrews TE 90Perfect · R5
  • Dallas Goedert TE 89Perfect · R7
  • Travis Kelce TE 92Excellent · R8
Off4

Multiple Power Run

Take a power back in round 1, then find Power guards and a second back after round 3.

Multiple Power Run wears defenses down with a power back behind Power blockers and keeps them honest with play action. Jonathan Taylor is the round 1 answer, but the guards that make the scheme work come much later.

Take early

  • Jonathan Taylor HB 96Perfect · R1
  • Quinn Meinerz RG 95Perfect · R2

Wait for

  • Chris Lindstrom RG 93Perfect · R4
  • Josh Jacobs HB 90Excellent · R4
  • Mike Evans WR 90Excellent · R5
Off5

Pistol

A scrambling quarterback first, then a Perfect-fit physical receiver in round 5.

Pistol sets the quarterback a few yards behind center so he can read the front, then hands off quickly to either side. It wants a quarterback who can run, a power back and physical receivers, and it is one of the few offenses where a veteran big receiver is a Perfect fit.

Take early

  • Josh Allen QB 99Perfect · R1
  • Puka Nacua WR 98Perfect · R1

Wait for

  • Mike Evans WR 90Perfect · R5
  • Josh Jacobs HB 90Excellent · R4
  • Aaron Brewer C 90Excellent · R4
Def6

4-3 Cover 3

The deepest defensive tackle pool in the game: Perfect-fit interior linemen go from round 4 to round 6.

4-3 Cover 3 relies on Power Rusher tackles to collapse the pocket while three deep defenders take away the big play. Ten defensive tackles grade Perfect for it, so there is no reason to spend an early pick inside.

Take early

  • Myles Garrett REDGE 99Perfect · R1
  • Fred Warner MIKE 98Perfect · R2

Wait for

  • Chris Jones DT 94Perfect · R4
  • Dexter Lawrence II DT 93Perfect · R4
  • Quinnen Williams DT 90Perfect · R5

46 Defense

The widest fit list of any defense: Perfect-fit edges and safeties are still there in rounds 4 to 6.

The 46 loads the box with run stoppers and brings pressure from everywhere. More players grade Perfect for it than for any other defense, so you can take the best player available early and still fill it with fits later.

Take early

  • Micah Parsons REDGE 98Perfect · R1
  • Fred Warner MIKE 98Perfect · R2

Wait for

  • Will Anderson Jr LEDGE 94Perfect · R4
  • Antoine Winfield Jr FS 93Perfect · R4
  • Derwin James Jr SS 93Perfect · R6

Tampa 2

Spend early on zone corners and edge rushers; the Power Rusher tackles come later.

Tampa 2 drops seven into zone and asks the front four to get home on their own. Zone corners and pass rushers go early in every draft, but the Power Rusher defensive tackles it needs are consistently available after round 3.

Take early

  • Christian Gonzalez CB 98Perfect · R1
  • Maxx Crosby LEDGE 97Perfect · R2

Wait for

  • T.J. Watt LEDGE 96Perfect · R4
  • Jalen Carter DT 89Perfect · R4
  • Aaron Donald DT 95Perfect · R6

3-4 Under

A Perfect-fit Superstar safety at 25 in round 4, and a nose tackle in round 5.

3-4 Under shifts its front to confuse protections and needs run-support safeties behind it. Kyle Hamilton is the pick that makes this scheme worth running in a fantasy draft: elite, young, and routinely available in round 4.

Take early

  • Myles Garrett REDGE 99Perfect · R1
  • Fred Warner MIKE 98Perfect · R2

Wait for

  • Kyle Hamilton SS 94Perfect · R4
  • Vita Vea DT 94Perfect · R5
  • Derwin James Jr SS 93Perfect · R6
Def10

4-3 Quarters

Zone safeties are the value here: two Perfect-fit free safeties go in rounds 4 and 6.

4-3 Quarters plays four deep and lets its safeties read the run. Corners go early for every defense, so build the edges and corners first and let the safeties come to you.

Take early

  • Micah Parsons REDGE 98Perfect · R1
  • Christian Gonzalez CB 98Perfect · R1

  • Antoine Winfield Jr FS 93Perfect · R4
